Making your own PCB's is easy
|

STEP 1Select a presensitised Printed Circuit Board to match your artwork. Kinsten uses a positive photoresist. That is - UV transparent areas will be etched away on the final PCB. Your artwork should have opaque tracks on a transparent background. If you are printing your own, Laserstar & Jetstar can produce well defined artworks, with dense blacks. They are far superior for printing PCB artwork than overhead transparency film. If you have an old negative artwork, then Quick Mark reversing film allows you to create a positive artwork from a negative. See QUICKMARK page for details on reversing film. See KINSTEN PRICE LIST for our extensive range of pre-sensitised Printed Circuit Board's. |

STEP 2Remove the protective coating and place the artwork against the presensitised surface. This can be done in a room with low level lighting. Kinsten does not require a darkroom for processing. Expose the presensitised PCB through the artwork. Follow the link for additional information on using the KVB30D exposure box. Depending on your artwork, exposure time is normally around 90 seconds. If a KVB30D is not available, a fluorescent lamp held close, and even bright sunlight can be used, but test exposures must be taken to determine correct exposure time. |

STEP 3Develop the image using DP50 developer. This can be done at room temperature in a shallow plastic tray such as a photographic developing tray. If the image won't develop fully, or streaks of resist are left, either the exposure was insufficient, or the developer is exhausted. A 50 gram sachet mixes with 1 litre of water and can develop a minimum of 10 x 100x150mm PCBs. Once mixed, developer has a working life of one day. Visit DP50 developer page for more information. |

STEP 4Fill an etch tank with your preferred etchant, following any mixing or dilution instructions. Ammonium persuphate is our etchant of choice, it is quick, relatively clean and affordable. Allow the tank to heat to operating temperature and place the PCB in the etchant. Turn on the bubbler or spray mechanism until all unwanted copper is removed. Click ET10 for more information on the ET series bubble etch tanks. Click Rota-Spray for more information on spray etch equipment. Note: Pump position is for illustration only. In use it should be above the liquid level. |

| Ammonium persulphate can only be sent by Courier(road). International orders can not be accepted. |
STEP 5Drill holes and vias with a PCB drill. A high speed drill press is essential for carbide drills, but good results can be obtained with HSS drill bits in a hand held drill. HSS drill bits can blunt quickly with fibre-glass boards and are best used with phenolic (PP) substrate PCB's. HSS drills are available for maintaining desoldering tools and can be ordered through our HAKKO DESOLDERING SPARES page.
Computronics supply new carbide drill bits or drill bits re-ground to be sharp as new. All have a 1/8" shank. |
